Yes the templates should really be updated with at least an example using the transactions method for both SPI and I2C, thanks I'll add this to the list. Internally we have moved everything over to use transactions now (there may be a small number of outstanding exceptions) but for a standard user using say a PIC or AVR the old method of doing things is just fine and will continue to be supported.
The Data transfer components are no longer required, they have been removed from the components list but still remain in the system as we currently cannot delete files via the updates system. I'll see if I can make it more obvious in their name that they are no longer required.
