Your suggestion to test the board with another chip was an excellent one. I pulled up the datasheet for my eblock and did the test program in there. Everything worked great. Incidentally, the green LED never when out. Why it went out on me previously is unclear. My addon board is still not working, ...

OK, let me start by mentioning that the adapter that plugs in on the board side can be reversed to change the polarity.
