Hello
You should be able to connect a voltage anywhere between 0 and 5V. Remember that the voltage you connect is the maximum the ADC can detect and feeding a larger voltage into an ADC pin may cause damage to the device.
The PICs with a VREF+ pin have the same functionality if the VREF+ I/O functionality is switched on.
