HP-488 "Could not ID the on-board chip"

Post by talhataj »

Hi Guys,

I am using HP488 v3 to program my PIC18f452 through PPP v3.9.12.26, but as i try to autodetect my controller, it says "Couldnot ID the on board device", i have checked the necessary PSU and USB jumper settings as per manual but still no sucess. I am using 13.5 supply. Also, when i try to detect and then program the builtin PIC 16F88 it works fine, i donot what is the problem. I have tried several chips PIC18F452 , PIC18F258 etc but no result............Please Help

Regards,
Taj.

It's pretty common with 18 series PIC at least EB006 board I am facing always. Couple of solutions could be..
1. Try to re-install usb driver for HP488 v3. (Here is the ppp I have posted..you can try that new one..http://www.matrixmultimedia.com/mmforum ... f=7&t=4992)
2. Un-plugging the usb cable and re-plugging it.
3. Can you please make sure that nothing is connected to portb?
Please let us know how it's getting.

Tried plugging and re-plugging several times, also nothing is connected to portB. I am using HP-488 board not the Eb006. I have updated the driver also but still the same message "Could not ID the on-board device". :/

I know that but they are similar and problem nature is similar. you will be surprised to know..I sometime need to re-install usb driver every time I power off the board and re-power again.

I am using Windows 7 , could that be a problem, but if it is then why it is detecting and programming the builtin PIC16F88????

That is 16 series PIC and works fine and easy with any 16 series pic. But some of 18 series causes this problem. I don't know why exactly but you can PM David. He could give you a clue.

Hello,

Just checking but have you removed the 16F88 device when inserting the 18F devices?

I am using socket U40 for my PIC18F452, while socket U18 has the built-in 16F88, i have not removed it, it came with the board and i think its non-removable

No no. Only one chip can be used at a time in the board and chip pic 16f88 is removable. That is just a bonus chip to play with. Please remove that and put only 18f452 and try again.
