Forum Suggestion: Need Categories

Post by mytekcontrols »

This forum is getting difficult to navigate with all the individual topics. In fact as I scan through it all, I notice that there seems to be some replication probably due to the sheer number of posts that have been made. It would seem before this gets too out of hand, that it is time to create some categories within the FlowCode section, folders so to speak, that will organize the posts into an easier to navigate system.

Here would be my suggested categories and - subcategories:
Communications
- USB
- RS232
- SPI
- I2C
- LIN
- IrDA
- Bluetooth
- CAN
- 1Wire
- Ethernet
- Other
Displays (Output Devices)
- LCDs (character)
- LCDs (graphic)
- LEDs (7 segment)
- LEDs (dot matrix)
- Other
Input Devices
- KeyPads
- KeyBoards (PS2)
- Mice (PS2)
- Switches
- Encoders
- Other
PWM
- Hardware generated
- Software Generated
Stepper Motors
PID
Sound
Analog
- ADCs
- DACs
EEprom
- Internal
- External
Math
- Integer
- Floating Point
Variables
Macros
Interrupts
Components
Chip Definition Files
C Code and Assembly
Suggestions for Next Version
What Are you doing with FlowCode?
Chip Programmers
Development Boards

This is what I could think of, but I'm sure there are other logical categories that I have missed. If anyone can think of something to add, please chime in.

You are right - this forum is in need of sub-categorising. But I don't think we need to split it into as many categories as you have listed - lots will end up with no posts and other posts may overlap categories and be difficult to place.

My vote would be for around 4 or 5 sub-categories. Without thinking too much, how about these:
  • General/Misc
  • Components (comms)
  • Components (other)
  • Bugs
  • Suggestions
I'd like to get input from other forum users about how best to divide this forum. So let's use this topic over the next week or so to get this feedback.

Remember, it's your forum (I'm talking to everyone here) - help us make it better for you...

Hi all, i prefer just a few categories, that way i will get to read more of them.
I seem to read those items that catch my eye and too many categories with same day-in, day-out titles will get passed by.

I`m afraid i am a creature of habits......human nature....

p.s. How many of you actualy look through ALL the catagories even now, as in General PICmicro programming, e-blocks, flowcode, ...bet your like me, you don`t know what you want to read until you see the title! so you stick to the same thread.

SO, is it possible to see all the new posts, say the first 10 or so, then as they get pushed off the bottom they then disappear into the correct category?

OR how about a menu item that did a quick bit of organising of the new posts?

Steve this looks good to me 8)

But I would agree with the addition of this as well, as suggested by Chevy6600 (if at all possible):

It's a good idea, but I'd personally be reluctant to do this because someone (i.e. Ben, Sean or me) would have to sort out the messages and put them into the correct place. Our time should be taken up with developing/updating products and answering posts, rather than administering the forum.

I think at the moment you can list all of the new posts, rather than having to dive into each forum individually. Perhaps this is enough?

Yes you are absolutely right. Your guys time is better spent elsewhere. And yes the list idea would be a good compromise.

Too bad only Chevy and I seem to be the only users participating in this discussion, because as you stated earlier, this forum is for the flowcode users, and it would be nice if others chimed in 8)
