Hi Everyone,

Looking to run Flowcode V8 with a compact PC stick setup. Anyone think this is viable setup please?

It should work (?) - but would be rather slow... I have one that I got in an Amazon deal that I could test for you - though last time I tried it it stuck mid update...

The price seems pretty high (Aus $529 = ~£300) - should be able to get something with a bit more horsepower for the money?

Martin,

Unfortunately Australia is expensive for lots of stuff :-( There is a more upmarket PC stick but its another $200.
My other alternative is to use an Intel NUC box which will be OK, but its more money again and will definitely do
the job.
If you get to test your Amazon stick, I would be interested to know how it goes please.

All seems to run AOK...

I copied the install files for FC8 and the Raspberry Pi toolchain to an SD card - and installed from there.
Apart from a minor glitch - at the end of installing the toolchain the window jumped to top left of the screen with just the right hand side of the window visible (with the close button) - as the installation had finished I just closed the window and all was well.

Performance doesn't seem too bad - startup of FC and compilation are noticeably slow - but it's certainly usable.. I would be a bit hamstrung by lack of memory - the C: drive has only 8GB free (it just has Kodi installed - but the model I have just has 32GB, so not such a problem with 64?) I created a large flowchart (using cut and paste - and some rather unsavory switch statements) and performance was good. Added a couple of components and all seemed well too (as an aside - does the bluetooth component on the RPi use the inbuilt hardware?) Flowcode doesn't seem to use a great deal of memory - thing might slow down if you have some memory hungry applications running at the same time (Chrome?)

I successfully compiled and ran a RPi program (on the same network) so all good.... Simulation got the fan running but worked ok.

Would I recommend to buy - maybe - but by the time you add a keyboard, mouse and display (and a powered USB hub - unless later models are fixed it doesn't work well to run WiFi and Bluetooth. Apparently the antenna are too close together - so forget that Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse combo) you might be better off buying a cheap laptop?

- I was impressed by how well Flowcode ran!

Thanks Martin for the very comprehensive test results, very much appreciated :-). My idea was to dedicate the stick to Flowcode only, nothing else.
Display may be the crucial part and may make a good sized laptop screen a better choice. However I will research the hardware a little further, but its nice to know that my original choice, is a workable possibility.

Cheers,

Jack.
