Has anybody successfully installed a ZIF socket in the 40 way dil on a Version 2 development board or the new Programmer board. If so which make and where to get from?

A standard 40-pin ZIF socket (with 0.6" / 15mm pitch) should be fine. You might need to put it in upside-down so that the arm of the socket is out of the way. Also, you might need to raise the ZIF socket by putting in 1 or 2 turned-pin DIL sockets underneath it.
