Strange operation when changing LCD text

I am having real problems that I have never come across before. I am using an Atmel ATTiny261 which is connected to a 16x2 LCD.
I can get messages into the display no problem, however I can get to a point where the amount of combined text in my program
gets to a point where the program starts operating stranglely, i.e. I have a software counter the seems to stop incrementing simply
because I have added a line of text to the LCD at a completely different part of the program ! .... if I remove a text screen form another
part of the program, it will now worl ok again.
The number of screens I am using is small at the moment (about 5 or 6) but I note that when I compile the TEXT result is about 900 ... not
sure what this signifies ??
The program runs ok on the simulator and the code size is around 3df (251 has 2k of code mem)
Update .... really doing my head in now .... could there be something wrong with the 261 model ????? never had any problems like this before.
Hardware all checked and no mis-wiring or shorts. Could there be a stack pointer problem ???
Can you plaese help ?
