I do believe you've nailed it sir !

With the same example project supplied, I've tried both free-running and manually stepping-through with successful results, and particularly with the latter it is now possible to observe all bar LEDs extinguishing immediately upon passing the associated PORTC icon that sets all driving bits low at the start of the flow.
