Hi Jorgen,

The ESP32 WROOM is the module from Espressif with the ESP32 and all the traces done in a way where it has been canned and certified as EMC compliant. This is the one to use if you wish to build the module onto your own PCB.

The ESP32 Dev Kit is a board with the WROOM module fitted. There is likely other parts to the board such as a USB socket, USB to serial IC and voltage regulators etc which means you can instantly be up and running with this product. Therefore this is the board to use if you don't want to create your own PCB.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ben/ Jurgen

I was looking at these boards and there is a bit of confusion specially from myside as I can only get them from Ali-express being in Russia,
there are a ESP32D and a ESP32U boards available and as usually in Ali-express not sure if this is v1 or S boards or what they are!
Not sure to buy a 32D or 32U WROOM board any suggestions appreciated

It also seems that placing the Dev board on an PCB would be easily done so integrating the Pins into other circuitry would be easily done

Hello Peter,

Looks like the difference between the D and the U is the antenna.

ESP32-WROOM-32D - Meandered Inverted-F Antenna
ESP32-WROOM-32U - U.FL / IPEX antenna connector

This website had some useful info.

I've been using these a lot and think they are good value for money.

Only downside is the battery charging IC is not good and needs to be swapped for battery operation.
