<^< Written Questions: Fundamentals | Course Index | Introduction: Passive Components >^>(:nl:)

The section bellow contains an assignment for you to complete. This can be printed out for your own use.

An electronic test equipment manufacturer has asked you to assist with the development of a simple "go"/"no-go" electronic component tester. The component tester is to be able to detect the following fault conditions:

ComponentFault conditionOccurs when
Resistorsopen-circuitresistor is "burned-out"
Capacitorsshort-circuitcapacitor dielectric breaks down
Inductorsopen-circuitinductor is "burned out"
Fusesopen-circuitfuse is "blown"

The tester is to be fitted with a battery, two terminals (to which the component under test is to be connected), and a small low-voltage filament lamp.

#Sketch the circuit of the tester. Label the circuit clearly. #Suggest, with reasons, suitable ratings for the battery and filament lamp. #Explain how the circuit works and how it is possible to distinguish between faulty and functional components. #Produce a simple user's guide to the component tester and the indications that it provides.
