Written Questions: Passive Circuits

<^< Multiples Choice Quiz: Passive Circuits | Course Index | Assignment: Passive Circuits >^>(:nl:)

The section bellow contains a list of written questions. These can be printed out for your own use.

1. Resistors of 27 Ω, 33 Ω, and 120 Ω are connected across a battery of 9 V. Determine the voltage drop across each resistor and the current supplied by the battery.

2. A DC power supply is rated at 1.6 A output. If the power supply delivers 350 mA to a pre-amplifier and 1.1 A to a power amplifier, how much current is available for a radio tuner?

3. Four 22 Ω resistors, each rated at 1 W, are connected (a) in series and (b) in parallel. Determine the equivalent resistance in each case. Also determine the maximum current that should be applied to the combination.

4. A moving coil meter has a resistance of 100 Ω and it requires a current of 10 mA to move the indicator to the full-scale position. Determine the value of parallel "shunt" resistor required if the meter is to be used as an ammeter reading 1 A full-scale.

5. A series C-R circuit consists of C = 100µF and R = 100kΩ. Determine the time constant of the circuit. If the circuit is connected to a 10 V DC supply and the capacitor is initially uncharged, sketch a graph showing how the voltage drop across the capacitor changes over the time interval 0 to 5 s. Label your graph clearly.

6. A C-R discharging circuit consists of C = 2µF and R = 500 kΩ. If the capacitor is initially charged to a voltage of 20 V, determine the time taken for the capacitor voltage to fall to 6.3 V.

7. With the aid of simple circuits based only on capacitors and resistors, show how a square wave input can be converted to (a) a series of narrow pulses and (b) a triangular shaped waveform.

8. Sketch the circuit of (a) a simple C-R integrator and (b) a simple C-R differentiator. Clearly identify the input and output connections of each circuit and sketch typical output waveforms resulting from a square wave input signal. (:nl:)(:table style="clear:both":)
