We can demonstrate the force that exists between electric charges by suspending a positively charged glass rod.

If a second - positively charged - glass rod is held close to the suspended glass rod, the suspended rod will twist away from the other rod, as shown.

This shows that "like charges repel".

If a second - negatively charged - ebonite rod is held close to the suspended glass rod, the suspended rod will twist towards the other rod, as shown.

This shows that "unlike charges attract".
