Worksheets: Differential Amplifier

<^< Differential Amplifier | Course Index | Direct Coupled Amplifier >^>(:nl:)

Objective: To investigate a differential operational amplifier.
Underpinning knowledge: Operational amplifier symbols and connections.
Apparatus: TINA circuit file, or apparatus to make the following circuit.

TINA Circuit File: Click here to download circuit file
Initial Settings: V'_in1_' = V'_in2_' = 0V, R'_1_' = R'_2_' = 100kΩ, R'_3_' = R'_4_' = 500kΩ
Requires: Paper, Linear graph paper, pen or pencil.
Instructions:

(a) Set R'_1_' = R'_2_' = 100kΩ and R'_3_' = R'_4_' = 500kΩ

(b) Set V'_in1_' and V'_in2_' to 0V

(c) Measure and record the values of V'_in1_', V'_in2_' and V'_out_' (using VM1).

(d) Repeat (c) for each of the following conditions:

* V'_in1_' = +1V and V'_in2_' = 0V * V'_in1_' = 0V and V'_in2_' = +1V * V'_in1_' = -1V and V'_in2_' = 0V * V'_in1_' = 0V and V'_in2_' = -1V * V'_in1_' = +1V and V'_in2_' = +1V * V'_in1_' = -1V and V'_in2_' = -1V

(e) Set R'_1_' = R'_2_' = 100kΩ and R'_3_' = R'_4_' = 1MΩ

(f) Repeat (b) to (d) above.

Observations:

(a) Comment on the results obtained.

(b) Show that the output voltage, V'_out_', of the amplifier is given by: V'_out_' = -R'_F_'/R'_in_' x (V'_in1_' - V'_in2_') where R'_F_' = R'_3_' = R'_4_' and R'_in_' = R'_1_' = R'_2_'

Further work:

With R'_3_' = R'_4_' = 1MΩ and R'_1_' = R'_2_' = 100kΩ, use the data obtained earlier to plot a graph showing the relationship between V'_out_' and (V'_in1_' - V'_in2_'). What does the slope of this graph indicate?
