Before carrying out the measurement it is important to ensure that the meter is correctly zeroed on the ohms range. This involves shorting the test leads together and adjusting the set zero control to obtain full-scale deflection on the meter (the pointer moves to the extreme right-hand of the scale). Once the meter has been zeroed, the test leads are placed on the resistor leads and the scale reading is noted. In this case, the meter resistor has a resistance of 39 ohms.
