Worksheet: Resistors in Parallel

<^< Resistors in Parallel | Course Index | Resistance and Temperature >^>(:nl:)

Objective: To investigate resistors connected in parallel.
Underpinning knowledge: Resistance. Preferred values. Parallel connections.
Apparatus: TINA circuit file, or apparatus to make the following circuit.

TINA Circuit File: Click here to download circuit file
Initial Settings: R'_1_' = 1kΩ, R'_2_' = 2kΩ, R'_3_' = 3kΩ.
Requires: Paper, Linear graph paper, pen or pencil.
Instructions:

(a) Using initial settings verify that 1/R = 1/R'_1_' + 1/R'_2_' + 1/R'_3_'.

(b) Change R'_1_' to 15kΩ, R'_2_' to 27kΩ and R'_3_' to 33kΩ.

(c) Again check that 1/R = 1/R'_1_' + 1/R'_2_' + 1/R'_3_'.

Observations:

Confirm that, in each case, the reciprocal of the effective resistance of the parallel combination of resistors is equal to the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistance values.

Further work:

Using only preferred value resistors in the E12 series, suggest how you could use a parallel combination of three fixed resistors to obtain the following values of resistance: 333Ω, 5Ω, and 3.75Ω. Check your answers using your simulation software.
